The Hidden Traps – Shaytan’s Influence in Daily Life

Shaytan’s Traps: How to Recognize and Overcome Them

In our daily lives, we often face struggles that seem small—an argument, a moment of pride, a distraction that pulls us away from worship. What we may not realize is that these moments are part of Shaytan’s strategic efforts to weaken our faith and distance us from Allah.

Shaytan operates subtly, working step by step to lead people astray. Allah warns us in the Qur’an:

"And do not follow the footsteps of Shaytan. Indeed, he is a clear enemy to you."
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:168)

Understanding Shaytan’s methods can help us recognize his influence and protect ourselves. Below are four major traps of Shaytan and how we can break free from them.

Trap 1: Spreading Conflict, Hatred, and Division

One of Shaytan’s primary tactics is to create disputes and hostility among people. Whether in families, friendships, or communities, his goal is to cause division and prevent reconciliation.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Iblis places his throne upon water, then he sends out his troops. The nearest to him are those who cause the most discord."
(Sahih Muslim 2813)

Shaytan whispers thoughts of anger, pride, and suspicion, making people unwilling to forgive or seek peace. A minor misunderstanding can escalate into a long-lasting conflict simply because of ego and assumption.

How to Overcome This Trap

  1. Take the initiative to reconcile. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Shall I not tell you something better than fasting, prayer, and charity?" The companions said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He replied, "Reconciling between people, for disputes and grudges shave away faith."
    (Tirmidhi 2509, Hasan)

  2. Control your pride. Accept that apologizing does not make you weak but rather strengthens relationships.

  3. Make du’a for those you are in conflict with. This softens the heart and reduces resentment.

By prioritizing forgiveness and unity, we can dismantle one of Shaytan’s strongest traps.

Trap 2: Arrogance and Self-Righteousness

Shaytan himself was cast out of Jannah because of arrogance. When Allah commanded him to prostrate to Adam (عليه السلام), he refused, saying:

"I am better than him. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay."
(Surah Al-A'raf 7:12)

Pride can affect even the most religious individuals. A person may begin to look down on others, thinking, "I pray regularly, I have knowledge, I am better than those who are not practicing." This is a dangerous mindset.

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

"No one who has an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise."
(Sahih Muslim 91)

How to Overcome This Trap

  1. Acknowledge that all guidance comes from Allah. No one attains righteousness by their own effort alone.

  2. Remember past mistakes. Reflecting on your own shortcomings prevents feelings of superiority.

  3. Serve others humbly. Helping those in need fosters gratitude and humility.

By constantly seeking humility, we can protect ourselves from Shaytan’s whispers of pride.

Trap 3: Uncontrolled Emotions – Anger, Jealousy, and Despair

Shaytan manipulates negative emotions to weaken faith and ruin relationships.

1. Anger

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Anger comes from Shaytan."
(Sunan Abi Dawood 4766, Sahih)

Uncontrolled anger leads to words and actions that people later regret. Shaytan fuels anger because it causes disunity and sin.

Solution:

  • When angry, say "A‘udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim."
  • Change your position—if standing, sit; if sitting, lie down.
  • Make wudu, as water cools down the fire of anger.

2. Jealousy

Jealousy led Qabil (Cain) to kill his brother Habil (Abel), committing the first murder in history (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:27-30). Shaytan uses jealousy to make people unhappy and ungrateful.

Solution:

  • Make du’a for the person you feel jealous of. This purifies the heart.
  • Focus on your own blessings rather than what others have.
  • Remember that Allah distributes provisions as He wills.

3. Despair

Shaytan also makes people believe they are too sinful for Allah’s forgiveness. However, Allah says:

"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)

Solution:

  • Always have hope in Allah’s mercy.
  • Make sincere tawbah (repentance) and seek forgiveness.
  • Increase good deeds, as they erase sins.

By managing our emotions properly, we can prevent Shaytan from using them against us.

Trap 4: Distractions and Wasted Time

In modern times, social media, entertainment, and endless distractions have become powerful tools for Shaytan. He doesn’t always push people into sin directly—instead, he keeps them too busy to focus on their faith.

A common example is delaying Salah due to television, gaming, or social media. Eventually, Fajr is missed, Qur’an is neglected, and spiritual emptiness follows.

Allah warns:

"And do not follow the footsteps of Shaytan. Indeed, he is a clear enemy to you."
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:168)

How to Overcome This Trap

  1. Set time limits for social media and entertainment.
  2. Prioritize Salah—never delay it for worldly distractions.
  3. Surround yourself with reminders of Allah, such as Islamic lectures, Qur’an recitation, and righteous company.

By being mindful of how we spend our time, we can break free from distractions and strengthen our faith.

How to Protect Yourself from Shaytan

Shaytan’s goal is to weaken our faith, but Allah has given us powerful ways to protect ourselves.

Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)

"Indeed, the remembrance of Allah is a protection from Shaytan."
(Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:36)

Seeking Refuge in Allah

  • Say "A‘udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim" when feeling angry, tempted, or distracted.

Strengthening Faith

  • Pray Salah on time.
  • Read Qur’an daily.
  • Make du’a for guidance.

Choosing Good Company

"A person follows the religion of his close friend."
(Abu Dawood 4833, Sahih)

By making small but consistent efforts, we can recognize and resist Shaytan’s traps.

Final Reminder

"Indeed, those who fear Allah—when an impulse from Shaytan touches them, they remember [Him], and at once they have insight."
(Surah Al-A‘raf 7:201)

May Allah grant us the wisdom to recognize Shaytan’s tricks and the strength to overcome them. Ameen.
